• Talking to Your Provider about your Health Care Needs:
Establishing care with your provider is important to get all your health needs met and covered by your health plan. Your provider needs to know about you, your body and your health. Your doctor needs to know about ALL of you. These talking points are meant to help you prepare to meet your doctor for the first time and have a genuine conversation about your health. You can practice with a friend if you get nervous or write these things down and bring them to your appointment. Remember, you’re entitled to this care.

• Name & Gender Change:
Changing your name and gender on your identity documents can be a bit overwhelming and nebulous, however, its actually pretty straightforward when you follow these checklists:

• If you were born IN California (or another state that does not require a court-order gender change to amend your birth certificate):
check here to know the law in the state you were born: Know Your Rights
If you were born in California, you are not required to seek a court-order gender change to amend your birth certificate, so follow these steps. The steps here are much easier than seeking a court-order gender change. You are still able to change your gender on your identity documents, you just do not need a court-order gender change to do so. Please make sure to discuss your options fully with your GHC advocate if you have questions.

Please note, that this process does not require you to attend a court hearing for your name change! You are not required to publish an ad in the newspaper!! If a court clerk tells you otherwise, contact GHC immediately.

• If you were born OUTSIDE of California:
To learn what the policy on changing your identity documents is for the state in which you were born, check the Lambda Legal state-by-state guidelines: State-by-State Guidelines
If you were born in a state that requires you to seek a court-order gender change to amend your birth certificate, then follow these steps. Please make sure to discuss your options fully with your GHC advocate if you are unsure at any point in the process.

Please note, that since you are seeking a court-order gender change, you will most likely be asked to appear for a court hearing (depending on the county). You are not required to publish an ad in the newspaper!! If a court clerk tells you otherwise, contact GHC immediately.

Provider Resources

This section is meant specifically for providers. Transgender and gender non-conforming patients and clients face a multitude of barriers to care because their providers often don’t have the resources to navigate their care or the language to support their patients. GHC is has created templates, clinical protocols and gathered resources so that providers can gain the knowledge they need to fully care for their patients and clients.
